Open Mic Night

Held every third Friday of each month at 7pm in the Parish Hall:  Songs, Poems, Readings, and Food!

Dear Friends of Music:
Early in March, Sundays at Four will honor the memory of Smithfield’s own Doris Rae
Gwaltney with a piano recital played by her accomplished and talented grandson,
Joseph Vaz. His program will include some of his grandmother’s favorite pieces, as well
as music of Chopin, MacDowell Fauré, Ravel. In addition, Joseph will play a piece by
the late Ed Bland, husband of Mary Batten Bland of Smithfield, a composer Joseph
knew personally.

Joseph has performed twice for Sundays at Four audiences. Since these appearances,
Joseph has acquired degrees in Piano Performance and Mathematics with a minor in
French as an Indiana University Fellow, and a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance
from the College Conservatory of Music at Cincinnati University. He is now a doctoral
student at the City University of New York studying with Julian Martin.
The March 3 program will be followed on April 7 with a concert by the Diehn Chorale, a
select group of scholarship singers from Old Dominion University. In May, the Tidewater
Cello Ensemble will make a return engagement just after arriving home from their
European tour of Germany and Austria. In August, we host the annual Terrific Teen
Talent Recital. Our 2024-2025 Season will begin in September. All programs will be
held at Christ Episcopal Church, 111 S. Church Street, Smithfield.

Sundays at Four is Smithfield’s only classical and jazz performance organization. We
have not reached out for donations or contributions in more than a year, but as with all
arts organizations, ticket sales alone cannot sustain the cost of bringing artists to
Smithfield as well as the cost of marketing, facilities, piano tuning, and more.
Our all-volunteer board functions well as we strive to bring the best of Virginia’s
professional talent to our venue, and we offer recital and master class opportunities to
our young musicians.

If you value what Sundays at Four brings to our community, won’t you please consider
making a gift to help secure and continue these varied performances and youth
opportunities? A check can be made out to Sundays at Four and mailed to the address
above, or can be turned in at the ticket table at the concert.
Thank you so much,
